  • Memorial Weekend

    By Edward Robinson | May 15, 2009

Not much going on here.  I hope everyone is riding well and enjoying the season.  I have been off the bike for about 2 months total so my season did not take off.  I had some medical reason for being off the bike for the last month including knee pain, but I am healed up and back riding this week.  Feeling great and enjoying myself.  I may start doing structured workouts in the next couple of weeks.  I am enjoying my bike fit although I am still tweaking it a bit.  Got the knee problems I was having worked out through iterations of adjusting cleat shims and saddle height, but I think I got it about right.

I will be up in Livingston over Memorial weekend.  If anyone will be up that way I would like to coordinate a ride either road or MTB.  I if you can make it, I willl try to hang on.

    Ronnie Strange made the Chronicle

    By Dave Svahn | March 13, 2009

     Hey Guys;

I contacted Mr. Dale Robertson of the Houston Chronicle about writing a story on Ronnie Strange…Dale is the writer who wrote the article on me when I met and raced Lance last year…..I asked him if he could write a story about Ronnie and he did…This article was in the paper yesterday…  Enjoy…..David Svahn

Dobie product finds his calling aboard road bike

Ronnie Strange was a good enough athlete at Pasadena’s Dobie High School to earn a track scholarship to Texas A&M, and he enjoyed a successful career running the 800 meters. But it turns out he may have missed his true calling.

Based on Strange’s rapid rise through the cycling ranks, it appears he should have been using his strong young legs for pedaling instead of pounding the pavement. Still, only 26, he’s making up for lost time, having surged to the top echelon of Houston-area riders in less than two years.

“I hope to have that (professional) contract in front of me by the end of the year,” Strange said. As for his long-term goal, a Tour de France yellow jersey would be nice. This is a man with very big plans.

Strange took up mountain biking after he finished at A&M in 2005 “just to lose some weight,” he said. “I’d gained about 40 pounds since I quit running. Being a competitive person, I got into racing pretty quick.”

Then a friend convinced him to get a road bike, so he spent $1,400 on one and entered his first race in February 2007 as a bottom-rung Cat-5.

“I got dropped, just shot off the back,” Strange said. “I was kind of discouraged. But I kept at it. I trained every day for the next three months, and pretty soon I was lapping everybody. When I became a Cat-4, I started winning.”

By June of last summer, he had reached Cat-1 status and subsequently made a huge splash in a grueling ICC Super Week competition outside Chicago, finishing fourth in the points standings over three weeks of competition that included riders from top domestic teams like Jittery Joe’s and Rock Racing.

Now wearing the kit of the semi-pro Ten Speed Drive/BH Bicycles Cycling Team and coached by Gaye Koening of Clear Lake’s RPM Sports — where Strange works as a fitness instructor — he scored his first Cat-1 pro-level victory in the Alsatian County Omnium Crit in Castroville in early February, besting a strong field that included Patrick McCarthy of the Maxxis-OUCH team and Bike Barn’s Kevin Kremke, generally regarded as the No. 1 rider in Houston.

“I’m giving Kevin a run for his money,” Strange said.

Another season of Spring Time bike racing in Texas, Yay!

    By Teddy Childers | February 3, 2009

SOoooooo it seems I need to dust off my saddle and strap it to John Cobb for a good ride.  Geez ladies, I have never seen anyone so excited over a dude watching you ride a bike.  Anyone run a predator check on him?  Ha, kidding.  What does the race schedule look like for everyone?  I’ve been riding about 300 miles a week and working with Roland Green’s former coach,  which is my neighbor.  Man, I’m fast, with the help of some prescription drugs!!! We need to plan some team events.  Team mascots are ready to mingle!!!

    Sunday’s Ride in Coldsprings. . .

    By CJR | February 2, 2009

Guys I can’t say enough about a good fit!  This “FIT” thing is an elusive creature. . .  I am convinced there is no perfect fit on a bike - BUT I am also now convinced that talking to the right person can get you very close!  In some cases ALOT closer than where you were originally.  My fit w/Cobb really paid dividends this weekend at Coldsprings.  I rode with Carlos on Sunday (approx 8:00 AM).  The weather held out very nicely I might add.  We put in approx 2.5 hours w/ Carlos doing 2 loops around the race course (hard pace) and I did 1.5 loops at 85-90%.  (I did not want to over do it with the new position)  I felt great, knees felt great, and no bonking.  I felt strong thru the entire ride and def. felt alot more motor recruitment with the new fit.  I was basically using more muscle, more efficiently - and it was very apparent! (esp. when climbing)   I’m much much lower in the front end and had absolutely NO pain or even tightness in my back!  I’m not trying to marry this guy or anything (Cobb), I’m just really impressed with his ideas / knowledge.  I did have some very tight / sore hamstrings, which I will be working on over the next few weeks!  So enough about Cobb, lets get back to the ride . . .

Carlos and I spoke a little about getting a team camp together a couple of times a year at Coldsprings. . .  I think this is very doable for all of us!  We really need to get together more often and this would be some great riding (MTB / Road).

Lets stop procrastinating and make this happen.  It can happen over a weekend, we can all camp at the park (great ammenities) and get some mileage in.

RACERS. . . .  Rudy “The Rude Dog” Reyes raced this weekend and really had to grind out thru alot of adversity to a good finish in Cat 5 mens New B.  RACE.  I am going to make a commitment to get out and suffer with him (though I am really not ready) - Lets get some more people out to the races!!!

LOS - player good ride!  and remember power (power tap elite) is good . . . .

    BIKE FIT W/ JOHN COBB!

    By CJR | January 27, 2009

Hey guys!  been a while since my last post . . .(Los already reprimanded me)!  So I had a fitting with Mr. Cobb over the weekend at RPM Sports here in Clear Lake (Houston).  It was a very positive experience, I believe there are a few of us who went to visit Cobb over the weekend.  Please post, I’m interested in how your fits went.  My fit was fairly interesting, saddle height lower by 1mm, saddle back by 4mm (tilt up by 1 notch???), and bars dropped by 13mm!  The bar drop was the most radical of the adjustments.  I’m not sure if my math is correct on the final figures, but it should be close.  Another major adjustment were my shoes and cleats.  I’m not sure what the difference is, but they are def moved forward and my left shoes has a small shim or cant for varus or valgus correction!  I immediately felt more comfortable and was able to hold a steady 175-200 watts at a much lower RPE.

Ronnie Strange was great in assisting John Cobb with the fit process and made for a more comfortable situation.  He even cut out a custom metatarsal button for my left shoe insole to alleviate some pressure on the ball of my foot.  It was pretty cool!

Meeting and speaking w/ John Cobb was a true learning experience.  He DOES NOT TALK MATH, he is more of a GURU. . .   I had the general feeling that his understanding of the way the biomechanics, physics, and physiology of a proper bike fit work together, was on a different level for sure.  His approach is based on how the body works most efficiently on the bike, not how long your stem is.  He looks for key signs and continues to micro adjust until he feels he is within range???  At least thats what it seemed like to me.

Overall I was impressed, but I am dissapointed in the analysis or hard data I recieved from the Retul system at RPM.  The numbers generated by the system and the scope of what it is capable of fell well short of what I received!  I have already talked to Ronnie and I believe he is going to help me get this corrected.  The equipment is new and I don’t think Ronnie has a full understanding of how to use it.

I would recommend the Cobb fit to anyone!  Its great for riders of any level, not just racers.

    This weekend…..Coldsprings perhaps?

    By Los | January 26, 2009

Hello lady (C. Rosado) and gentlemen,

I’m really contemplating going to Coldsprings both Saturday and SUnday.  I’m racing at Castorville next weekend, and I’d like to get some hills under my legs and my under my fat gut.  Anyhow I’m planning on riding one day pretty easy and the other day at a pretty good pace.  Like I said before from my pops place its about a 45 min drive.  I can hold 2 bike in the bed of my truck….I could hold more but I’m a cheap @ss and haven’t got a hitch for a bike rack…..sorry.  I’m willing to drive so if anyone is down please let me know. If not I’ll go solo.  I’m looking forward to Castorville, it’ll be my first race in about two years.  I feel wierd.  Anyhow,  I hope everyone is doing well and riding or attempting to ride.  Talk to yall soon. Peace

    -Los

    Weekend Events Jan 24

    By Edward Robinson | January 24, 2009

I have been a little out of sight for a while with work hammering me.  Good and bad thing.  Good because I get to eat and keep clothing on my kids, bad because it makes hitting the bike that much harder.  Old story we all live it.

I am going to the RPM meeting today and going to get a John Cobb bike fit.  I will let you know how that goes.

There is also a meeting tonight at the Wild Geese Tavern with recard to the Pearland Multisport Athletes Club.  This was started up with TRI On the Run, ChiroHealth and I don’t know who else.  They have invited our shop to participate and I thought I would check it out.  This place is over hear the Home Depot at 518 and 288.

I do not know where we stand on Jerseys at this time.  Last count we only had a 10 count of interested parties.  I will check with Colin to see what the shop can do.  We have to order 25 minimum and I am not sure the shop will support 15 kits.  We will see.

Have a great day, ride safe.  We need to get another out of town event scheduled so  post if you are heading out to ride or race.  Even if we are not racing perhaps we can drink beer and watch you.
