  • What is Up with Bay Area Cycling Team

    By Edward Robinson | January 14, 2010

Well it’s a new season.  I have been out of touch with most of you trying to keep my business running and finding time to ride when I can.  Not in the best shape for racing but by the time some of my favorities come around I hope to be in better shape. I have been trying to work with Ira to get a mailing list setup but we have not been communicating well here lately.

Thus the point for the email.  Anyone riding under the Bay Area Cycling Team jersey anymore? Anyone interested in keeping this up and running?  If so check in and lets start posting our plans.  I would be willing to attend races with other riders to both share in the fuel, fellowship, riding ect. and I am sure other would as well.  Just reply to this post or drop me an email.

We could use new kits too so if you have interest let me know on that.  I doubt we have a minimum order but we can try.

    Tour Das Hugel

    By Edward Robinson | October 26, 2009

Friend of mine… (Since I have not ridden this I use that term with some trepidation as I am sure this suggestion was intended to hurt me!)  sent me this url for Tour Das Hugel

     http://www.tourdashugel.com/index.htm

Looks like a lot of fun.  100+ miles of the hardest hills in Austin.  Its a free ride that is supported.  Finish and you get to wear a coveted t-shirt.  I cannot go this year due to some previously arranged plans but I wanted to share.

    Tour De Gruene

    By Edward Robinson | October 19, 2009

Well if you have been living under a rock this month come on out… Tour De Gruene is in a couple of weeks.  I just got an email indicating that the Time Trial and Team Time Trial races have been filled and registration is now closed.  I was on the fence since I have only been riding on a regular basis for a little over a month due to injury and work load of the summer so now I don’t have to worry about it anymore at least.

I will be there with my family, extended family, friends, and those just wishing to have a good time who might know me.  Hope to see you there too.

    Helotis

    By Edward Robinson | October 18, 2009

Had a great ride with Teddy yesterday morning.  Crisp 60 degree morning watching the sun come up over the rolling hills in north west San Antonio.  That is one great! ride.   We are talking about doing some riding out near Bastrop when we have time.  If you have not done so check out the latest issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine (not posted yet evidently keep looking).  They have a good article on some new riding options in Big Bend which might be fun if anyone has a plane we can take out for the weekend :-).

    Riding in Bastrop

    By Edward Robinson | August 3, 2009

I just got back from a long weekend.  I took a four day vacation with my wife and some friends and stayed is some cabins in Smithville near Bastrop.  The cabins were actually located directly between Beucher State Park and Bastrop State Park on very near Park Road 1.  This is near Rocky Hill Ranch.  The Ranch is only about 10 min from the place we were staying.  Pretty close to Bluff Creek Rance in Warda as well.  The cabins were 2 bedroom with a hot tub and rented for around $160 a day.  There are 5 cabins total.  This would be a great place for the shop team/group to meet up for a weekend of riding both road and MTB.

If you are racing Rocky Hill or Warda it would be a great place to stay as well.  They have a common area with a fire pit as well.

I rode Rocky Hill with some friends.  It was very hot.  We got there just before 9 am and rode till noon.  When we got back in the truck it was 103 F.  Guys were still riding, but they are tougher than me.  The place was pretty empty as you would expect for a Friday.

The wife and kids will be back with our MTB to give it another go when it gets a little cooler.  Anyone wants to suggest a weekend and help put this together let me know.  Teddy and I hope more of you get with us on the SA MS 150.

Bike MS: Valero 2009 Alamo Ride to the River October 3-4, 2009

    By Edward Robinson | July 18, 2009

Ok, well Teddy asked that I join this event.  I feel it worth while and I will be giving back just a little while doing something I love anyway.  Now I just have to get back onto my bike.  I have been off a couple of months.  I have been very busy at work, home, and did you notice it has been hot?

I have posted a link to my personal page on my company home page so check it out.

Here is a link to Teddy’s team page.

You know you wanna do it, and we are going to have a blast.  I have never ridden one of these, but it looks fun and Teddy is a good guy to hang with.  What about YOU! Anyone else signed up?

    Memorial Weekend

    By Edward Robinson | May 15, 2009

Not much going on here.  I hope everyone is riding well and enjoying the season.  I have been off the bike for about 2 months total so my season did not take off.  I had some medical reason for being off the bike for the last month including knee pain, but I am healed up and back riding this week.  Feeling great and enjoying myself.  I may start doing structured workouts in the next couple of weeks.  I am enjoying my bike fit although I am still tweaking it a bit.  Got the knee problems I was having worked out through iterations of adjusting cleat shims and saddle height, but I think I got it about right.

I will be up in Livingston over Memorial weekend.  If anyone will be up that way I would like to coordinate a ride either road or MTB.  I if you can make it, I willl try to hang on.

Dobie product finds his calling aboard road bike

Ronnie Strange was a good enough athlete at Pasadena’s Dobie High School to earn a track scholarship to Texas A&M, and he enjoyed a successful career running the 800 meters. But it turns out he may have missed his true calling.

Based on Strange’s rapid rise through the cycling ranks, it appears he should have been using his strong young legs for pedaling instead of pounding the pavement. Still, only 26, he’s making up for lost time, having surged to the top echelon of Houston-area riders in less than two years.

“I hope to have that (professional) contract in front of me by the end of the year,” Strange said. As for his long-term goal, a Tour de France yellow jersey would be nice. This is a man with very big plans.

Strange took up mountain biking after he finished at A&M in 2005 “just to lose some weight,” he said. “I’d gained about 40 pounds since I quit running. Being a competitive person, I got into racing pretty quick.”

Then a friend convinced him to get a road bike, so he spent $1,400 on one and entered his first race in February 2007 as a bottom-rung Cat-5.

“I got dropped, just shot off the back,” Strange said. “I was kind of discouraged. But I kept at it. I trained every day for the next three months, and pretty soon I was lapping everybody. When I became a Cat-4, I started winning.”

By June of last summer, he had reached Cat-1 status and subsequently made a huge splash in a grueling ICC Super Week competition outside Chicago, finishing fourth in the points standings over three weeks of competition that included riders from top domestic teams like Jittery Joe’s and Rock Racing.

Now wearing the kit of the semi-pro Ten Speed Drive/BH Bicycles Cycling Team and coached by Gaye Koening of Clear Lake’s RPM Sports — where Strange works as a fitness instructor — he scored his first Cat-1 pro-level victory in the Alsatian County Omnium Crit in Castroville in early February, besting a strong field that included Patrick McCarthy of the Maxxis-OUCH team and Bike Barn’s Kevin Kremke, generally regarded as the No. 1 rider in Houston.

“I’m giving Kevin a run for his money,” Strange said.
